Welcome to Poitiers, France

Our worries of a tight connection through Paris to get to the city of Poitiers turned out to be unfounded. Customs and immigration in France seems to be a big yawn for tourists arriving by plane. Trains thought town have good connections to the subway and … everything works.

With two hours of sleep on the overnight flight to Paris, we were a bit jet lagged when we found our seats on the TGV or bullet train that whisked us from Paris’ Montparnasse train station to the small university city of Poitiers. We climbed the long flight of ancient stairs to the old medieval part of town and then walked though pleasant pedestrian pathways to our apartment. Laura from Airbnb host met us and showed us in.

It was too early for ”dinner” in France but we were tired and hungry. So we walked 500 meters to a Carrefour, a large supermarket chain. Despite being a small inner city grocery, we were amazed that food cost 1/2 of less than int he US, and all of the produce was fresh.

We explored the famous Notre Dame cathedral in this town. Alice lit a cande for her brother who passed away in the last year. We ate well and were ready to get to bed early.

Liberty Square features a small replica of the Statue of Liberty. The replica of the Statue of Liberty was erected to remember General Jean Baptiste Breton, who was publicly executed here in 1822. At the time this was the place of pillory and public executions His last words were « Vive la liberté, vive la France » . I was thankful not to see public executions here this day.
