A little night market

October 16, 2024

It’s coming to and end and it’s been a great adventure. Today is my last day, and in addition to packing and repacking, we want to take in some last sights.

Alice and I got up early. It’s hot here during the day, so getting up early is important if you want some outdoor activity. We walked over to the 7-Eleven for breakfast.

An everyday scene as we walk to breakfast.

An everyday morning scene as people head off to school and work.

I wanted to get back to the botanical garden for a morning walk, so Alice and I walked over there.

We surveyed some of the damage to the park and admired the degree of community volunteering to clean it up.
A woman was smartly dressed to protect her skin while riding the motor bike.

Returning home we worked on making sure the packing was all correct for travel, and rested. Family members arrived around noon with various foodstuffs — a fish, some vegetables, and a rooster that was sacrificed for our meal after repeatedly attacking other animals. in addition there were eggs and onions. it was a filling and tasty meal, though the the toughness of the rooster meat combined with the knowledge of his character was not appetizing.

With everything in place for travel, we left the home in the mid afternoon to go to a special night market. Alice drove us all to the south end of the subway system where we got on and traveled to the extreme other end of the system, 30 minutes away. There we got a quick taxi ride to the opening of the night market. This market was reported by Hanna to be primarily about agricultural supplies, but of course, in order to be successful, it must have a lot of food and other entertainment.

The entry to the Gangshan market.
Suddenly there was food everywhere. Here a basket of steam buns is brought out. They are one of my favorite foods in Taiwan.
Goose eggs.
Milk tea

In addition to food, there is a lot of interesting human interaction going on.

Alice and Hanna enjoying their finds.
There are some Muslim Taiwanese, and I’m not sure if they are related to the Weighers who are persecuted in China.
Step right up!
Get your duck here!
Games for the whole family
An indigenous Taiwanese woman takes a drink order for me.
Behold, a very special new pet duck.
Girls hawking fancy nails were still happy to pose for me even though I was an unlikely customer.
The Taiwanese may love ice cream as much as Americans.
Miniature cacti and succulents in profusion

After eating our way through the market, we were ready to return home. Alice drove us around her old neighborhood in an older area of town. It had a more old fashoned look with a lot of bright signs and people on the street.

A street full of signs and activity. Alice drove slowly so I could take this shot leaning out the passenger window.
A bright storefront.
A little of everything going on here.

Now we needed to get home and get to bed. It’s going to be an early morning ride to the airport tomorrow as Eric returns to the US and Alices stays in Taiwan for a while longer. Thanks for joining us on this adventure.
