Family day in Kaoshiung

October 13, 2024

We awoke to a quiet Sunday morning in Alice’s family’s neighborhood near the Botanical Garden. Alice had worked hard to get people on board with a family photos shoto this morning. Everyone was on hand and seemed to be making some progress, though the young ladies were way behind schedule, needing to attend to makeup and hair.,

Alice and I had picked the site for the shoot earlier in the morning when we had breakfast at 7-Eleven. There was a very nice patch of open shade on the front steps of the neighborhood temple, and one of the temple workers confirmed that there would be no problem shooting there.

Alice, Hanna and I walked over to start getting some shots and make sure the equipment was all working well. We had an external flash, a wireless transmitter and small softbox for nice light. We took some initial shots of Alice and Hanna and things were working smoothly. After an hour, Alice called the others to get over to the shoot site – now! – and they all came quickly.

I chose this point of view to emphasize Alice’s queen like role in the family.

Hanna could think of 100 other things she’rather be doing, but she went along with it.

All of us pose.

We had some down time to rest and relax for the afternooon. We read, knapped, studied, and got some householdtasks done. Later in the afternoon, Alice took me by motorbike into the central city to walk around the night market area before dinner would be had together later.

An example of Taiwan’s extensive motorbike culture.

As the time got closer to 5:30, we walked across the street to the restaurant where all eight of the family would meet and share in a traditional Taiwanese hot pot. These lare iron pots are headed on the table while an enormous variety of vegetables , meats and seefood are added to the pot and then withdrawn to be eaten. The cycle of adding and withdrawing items from the common pot is repeated until everyone is satisfied.

Alice and I rode back to the house on our motorbike.

I snapped this selfie as we whisked off on the motobike.

I love those smiles in the last photo, with you riding behind “the Queen.”

    1. Thanks, Tom. We’re riding the motorbike again this morning downtown to get some steam buns.
