From paradise to Mexicoland™ Theme Park

February 5, 2023

I said good-bye to my new friend, Bruce this morning. He with his extended family and friends were really an oasis for me. Last night they asked if I would grill the salmon they had bought for our meal. So I obliged and it turned out great. I was thankful to be able to add something to the mix.

Bruce took me down to the bus station and I got some breakfast before hopping on Primera Plus bus to San Miguel de Allende. My stomach became queasy on the way over, but I thought it was likely due to the winding road and recent heavy breakfast. As I arrived, my contact, Chucho ( a nickname for Jesús in Spanish, and also Avery common name, unlike the US) arrived and we took off to drop my stuff off at the hotel. From there we headed out to an archeological site called Cañada de la Virgin, which to me should mean little canyon of the virgin, but the dictionary says glen. No virgins were noted however, perhaps the only place yet in Mexico.

My companion for the day, Chucho, and I wait under a tree.
A pyramid at Cañada de la Virgin that dates from the early 500 AD.
Our guide, Uvalde, in indigenous to the area and his grandmother still speaks the native language, but it’s being lost.
A view from the top of the pyramid.

You might start to wonder, how many pyramids are there then in Mexico? The answer is that archeologists have only recovered a tiny proportion of them. There are thousands.

The very arid landscape around the ruins. I wondered how the active birds get water?

Driving back to the city, I still felt a little motion sickness, and went straight to the hotel where I showered and washed my clothes. Soon I felt ready to head out to the street.

Parroquia de San Miguel Archangel. Saint Michael the Archangel.
People dance as a live band plays favorites of cumbia, salsa and slow dancing ( rumba).

The town was teeming with wealthy tourists. I hope to get to some of the other areas of the city tomorrow, and to meet a photographer whose work I admire.

Thanx for putting these small blogs together and for including masterful shots of landscape and peoples.
