The colorful and windy Guanajuato

February 3, 2023

I awoke to the sounds of wind. The cold front that dipped down into the US also sent cooler weather down here and a lot of wind. The temps dropped into the 40’s about 10 degrees colder than usual here. My host, Bruce Hobson, invited me down for coffee to a coffee shop below the house. You see, Guanajuato is such a vertical city, built on the walls of a canyon, that it almost feels like the populace are cliff dwellers. So you actuall go down 5 flights of stairs to get to the road and to the coffee shop.

After getting coffee and a croissant ( no, this is not Spain!) , I headed out to explore the city. The main road to the downtown is a winding road down the canyon, so just keep going down.

Enjoying coffee in the cool morning on top of the coffee shop with my host, Bruce Hobson.

Beautiful parks fill the city
Colonial streets are typically painted rich colors.

I decided to have breakfast at Santa Cafe, where I ate the day before.

This couple who had been eating on the little bridge to the cafe, just had gotten up, so they agreed to pose for me.

I decided to head up into the hills and see the narrow passageways that define Guanajuato.

This was the narrow road that Hidalgo led an army down into town to start the War of Independence

After climbing up a long ways, I came to a monument overlooking the city.

Guanajuato, dominated by the famous gold Basilica of Our Lady of Guanajuato.

Returning back down to the historic district I took a very very long stairway with 145 steps.

A young woman and her little sister come down the long stairway
The narrow passageways can become canyons of color

A very active and successful day completed, I’m tired in the best way.
